NTT DOCOMO of Japan has published its first-half financial results for the six months ended 30 September 2020, noting that profit attributable to shareholders increased 5.1% year-on-year to JPY391.30 billion (USD3.75 billion) from JPY372.35 billion in the corresponding year-ago period. Operating profit reached JPY563.60 billion, up 4.3% from JPY540.26 billion, and pre-tax profit rose 3.5% to JPY568.02 billion, but first-half operating revenues dropped 2.0% to JPY2.28 trillion from JPY2.33 trillion previously. For the full year ending 31 March 2021, the carrier is forecasting operating revenues of JPY4.57 trillion (down 1.8% y-o-y), operating profit of JPY880.00 billion (up 2.9%) and net income of JPY605.00 billion (up 2.2%).
In operational terms, the provider reported 80.987 million mobile subscribers at 30 September 2020, up from 79.203 million at 30 September 2019, of which 63.476 million were LTE users (up from 58.542 million), 17.135 million were on its 3G network (down from 20.661 million) and 376,000 were registered to its 5G network – launched in March this year (when it reported 14,000 users). ‘DOCOMO Hikari’-branded fibre-optic broadband subscribers, meanwhile, reached 6.803 million, up from 6.167 million previously.
