MIT warns cellcos over pre-paid cut-off

26 Oct 2020

Jordan’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) has called on the nation’s mobile providers to reverse a recent change in the way that the trio manage pre-paid customers following the expiry of their subscriptions, regional news portal MENAFN reports. According to the ministry, the cellcos began disconnecting customers the day after their plan expired, having previously allowed users to receive calls for a month before being cut off. Minister Maha Ali claimed that the MIT’s competition unit had conducted a study on the matter and found that all three cellcos – Zain, Orange and Umniah – had implemented the measure, which the official claimed breached competition rules and limited subscribers’ options. As such, the MIT has officially addressed the companies to cease the practice and urged the trio not to take any decisions which ‘violate market mechanisms and free competition’.
