Madagascar begins deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots

Madagascans will enjoy free Wi-Fi access at 50 of the country’s busiest locations by the end of the year as part of a government plan to reduce the digital divide, reports newsmada.com. According to the Ministry of Posts, Telecoms and Digital Development (MPTDN), a total of 130 Wi-Fi access points will be established across the country by the end of 2023, under a programme unveiled in June to improve internet access and promote e-commerce, online learning and other services. Although Madagascar benefits from modern telecoms infrastructure, the Agency for Regulation of Technology and Communication (Autorite de Regulation des Technologies de Communications, ARTEC) reported that the country’s internet penetration rate stood at just 11.6% in 2019.
