O2 Slovakia opens pilot 5G network

8 Oct 2020

O2 Slovakia has launched pilot 5G networks covering four districts of Bratislava, using spectrum in the 1800MHz and 3.7GHz bands. A report from Zive.sk says that download speeds of over 600Mbps were achieved at the unveiling of the new network, though that was with just two devices connected simultaneously. The networks are trialling equipment from four separate vendors: Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE. The Slovakian government revealed last month that it is hoping to relaunch its 5G spectrum auction by the end of the year; applications for 700MHz, 900MHz and 1800MHz licences were invited in March but the sale process was halted in June, with no reason given for the postponement.
