The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has published its final determination on the price of wholesale mobile voice services, confirming that the mobile termination rate (MTR) will be reduced from its current level of AUD0.0170 per minute to AUD0.0119 from 1 January 2021. This rate will remain valid until 30 June 2024.
In a press release regarding the matter, the regulator’s chair Rod Sims noted that the shutdown of 2G networks prior to 2019 had been a major driver in the reduction in the cost of the Mobile Terminating Access Service (MTAS). ‘Mobile network operators upgrade their network technology regularly leading to reduced costs, including the cost of the MTAS. We are expecting them to pass on their gains from more efficient technologies to consumers,’ Sims was cited as saying.
