Icelandic telecoms operator Siminn has launched the first phase of its copper network switch-off programme, which will see the PSTN network (covering 99% of the Icelandic population) phased out by the end of 2021. Telecoms watchdog the Post and Telecom Administration (PTA, or Post-og Fjarskiptastofnun [PFS]) highlighted that during the second stage of the process, some households/businesses may lose all communications services, and to this end, it has appointed emergency line operator Neydarlinan as an universal service provider with Decision No.9/2020.
