Vodafone Greece says it intends to launch commercial 5G services in the first quarter of next year following completion of the government’s spectrum auction, which is set to be finalised by 21 December. The telco’s CEO Haris Broumidis told Capital.gr that services will initially be introduced in the main cities of Athens and Thessaloniki before expansion to other areas. Rival cellcos Cosmote and Wind are also expected to launch 5G in Q1 2021.

Greece began accepting applications last week for its auction of spectrum in the 700MHz, 2GHz, 3.4GHz-3.8GHz and 26GHz bands, with the frequencies carrying a combined starting price of EUR367.3 million (USD427 million).
