US Cellular, Verizon stage successful 5G mmWave tests

18 Sep 2020

US Cellular has teamed up with Ericsson and Qualcomm to stage what it claims is the ‘first extended-range 5G NR millimetre wave (mmWave) data call in the US on a commercial network’. The trial took place in Janesville, Wisconsin, over a more than 5km distance, notching speeds greater than 100Mbps. Ericsson added: ‘This achievement redefines the perception of 5G mmWave spectrum as an urban or high-density-only deployment technology and offers new opportunities to use current infrastructure for broader 5G coverage.’

Elsewhere, Verizon has completed lab trials with Corning in Westlake, Texas and begun lab trials with Samsung on new 5G mmWave in-building solutions which, when commercially launched, will provide 5G mmWave coverage inside facilities such as hospitals, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, schools, ports, retail stores and more. Verizon expects to begin the deployment of a commercial in-building product by the end of 2020.
