Telenor Sweden has announced plans to launch 5G in Stockholm towards the end of October and cover the whole country with advanced mobile services by 2023. 5G connectivity is automatically included in the Telenor Unlimited tariff, meaning half a million people in the capital will be able to use 5G services from next month, with network coverage reaching around half of the central part of the city at launch. Rival operators Telia, Tele2 and Tre launched their own 5G networks in May and June this year. The Telenor network uses 80MHz of spectrum in the 3.7GHz band which is shared with Tele2 via their Net4Mobility joint venture. Telenor says customers can expect download speeds of over 1Gbps.
Andres Suazo, mobile network manager at Telenor Sweden, commented: ‘We believe that our customers appreciate that we launch 5G when the network is good enough and covers large parts of the city so that it is possible to use the service properly in their everyday life. When we then continue to expand our national 5G network, we will do so in stages and expect to be ready in 2023. We will always ensure that we can offer a good service, launch on a broad front and cover most of each city centre before we launch and build on.’
