Claro Chile has signed up to use the Southern Fibre Optic Network (Fibra Optica Austral, FOA) for an initial period of six years. According to latercera.com, the 2,800km network connects the cities of Puerto Montt and Puerto Williams via a combination of submarine and terrestrial fibre-optic links and has a total capacity of 16Tbps. Cristian Salgado, Claro Chile’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, told the news site: ‘This agreement will allow us to provide better connectivity to the southern part of the country … [and] reduce the country’s digital divide.’
