Virgin Media Ireland plans to make gigabit connectivity available to almost one million premises across the country, the Irish Times reports. It is understood that the operator has opted to enable the faster speeds across its network – which was confirmed to pass 941,100 premises at the end of June 2020 – rather than roll out the service upgrade in stages. Paul Higgins, Virgin Media Ireland’s vice-president of commercial, called the development ‘transformative’, saying: ‘We believe it’s the right thing to do, to do it for everyone … It underlines the investment we’ve made. I think it’s fair to say it has been a continued and committed investment. It’s in excess of EUR1 billion (USD1.2 billion) to date.’
For those customers interested in signing up for the new peak speeds, the report notes that the service will cost EUR85 per month on a twelve-month contract, and subscribers will need the Virgin Media Ireland’s updated router, the ‘V2’.
