Cable ONE snaps up stakes in regional ISPs

US cableco Cable ONE has confirmed that it has acquired stakes of various sizes in a number of regional ISPs. Firstly, the takeover of ValueNet, an all-fibre provider operating in Kansas, closed on 1 July.

In addition, during the second quarter, Cable ONE also entered into an agreement to purchase approximately 40% of fixed-wireless player Wisper ISP. Wisper, it notes, was a significant winner in the Connect America Fund II auction, across six states currently served by Cable ONE. In doing so, Cable ONE partnered with Stephens Capital Partners and Nathan Stooke, Wisper’s founder, who remains its largest owner. This transaction also closed in early July.

Finally, Cable ONE acquired a less-than-10% interest in Nextlink Internet, another fixed-wireless provider and CAF II winner. Nextlink also operates in six states within the Cable ONE footprint. Bill Baker, the founder, majority owner and CEO of the company, continues to run the day-to-day business.
