State-backed Uzbektelecom (Uztelecom) announced on 3 August 2020 the completion of a large-scale project to expand and modernise its mobile network using 3G/4G technologies in all regions of Uzbekistan. The programme, which started in early 2020, involved upgrading more than 3,000 base stations nationwide, enabling access to LTE services in many locations whilst significantly increasing high speed mobile internet coverage, particularly in rural and remote areas. Work also included deployment of new mobile sites, with the operator reporting a month earlier that it had switched on more than 160 new base stations since the start of the year, mostly in rural/remote locations.
