Shaw Mobile launches for cable internet customers in BC, Alberta

31 Jul 2020

Western Canadian cableco Shaw Communications launched its Shaw Mobile service on 30 July 2020 as scheduled, offering LTE services over its existing cellular network shared with its Freedom Mobile brand, in British Columbia and Alberta only. Shaw Mobile is aimed firmly at Shaw Internet customers, who can sign up for a free-of-monthly-charge unlimited nationwide talk and text option for a one-time CAD20 (USD15) fee per line (up to a maximum of six lines per home cable account), and are also being offered hefty promotional discounts on data packages. ‘Unlimited Data’ plans cost CAD45 a month for 25GB (with reduced-speed access thereafter) for Shaw cable users under the promotion, compared to a CAD85 ‘standard’ price, with the option of US and Mexico roaming for an additional CAD10. Lighter mobile data users can opt for a ‘By The Gig’ data plan charging CAD10 per GB with unused data automatically rolling over for up to 90 days; a CAD15 ‘standard’ monthly fee for By The Gig plans is waived for Shaw Internet customers. Shaw Mobile subscribers also benefit from thousands of Shaw Wi-Fi hotspots across western Canada. Shaw’s president Paul McAleese claimed: ‘The launch of Shaw Mobile is the best example yet of how facilities-based providers can compete and innovate to deliver true wireless affordability. We are the only provider offering [CAD0] talk and text to internet customers in Canada and our data plans empower them to find an option that fits their unique needs.’
