5G trials in Iran have attained data download rates of 1.5Gbps, according to the Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology. Sattar Hashemi said tests are being carried out at a Tehran research centre. IRNA news agency reports that the centre was set up by local wireless operator MTN Irancell, which is part-owned by MTN Group of South Africa, but the trials are open to ‘all stakeholders’.
CommsUpdate wrote last month that the government had called on the country’s largest cellular operator, state-backed Mobile Communication Company of Iran (MCI), to launch a 5G network in parts of Tehran by early September.
