LIBTELCO to extend broadband to Grand Bassa, Margibi and Bomi Counties

State owned incumbent PTO Liberia Telecommunications Corporation (LIBTELCO) plans to extend its broadband internet footprint beyond the capital Monrovia and its environs, The New Dawn reports, citing Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Anderson Slober Chea, as saying. According to the official, the fixed line operator – whose broadband operation is ‘already in full swing’ in and around the capital – is expanding services to Grand Bassa, Margibi and Bomi Counties, while also preparing the ground to undertake service rollouts in other counties where high levels of economic activity support such a move. In a radio interview, Mr Chea said its broadband expansion plans have been slowed somewhat by the progress of the coronavirus in Liberia, but that LIBTELCO was still pursuing its strategy ‘to ensure every home within the capital is given the opportunity of service’. He went on to say that Liberia’s sole fixed line services provider has deployed a high speed IP backhaul data ring network that connects all existing tower sites thus, implementing an ‘above ground high speed data ring’ surrounding Monrovia and outlying areas, which is designed ‘to give Liberians access to global internet services, including research works by students’.
