Ericsson has been selected by SoftBank Corp to deliver a cloud native 5G Core for the Japanese mobile operator’s 5G standalone (SA) network. In a press release, the Swedish gear maker said that the solution, which includes Ericsson Cloud Packet Core, Ericsson Cloud Unified Data Management and Policy, as well as Ericsson NFVI, should perform ‘a key role in SoftBank’s operational transformation’, noting that the platform will provide SoftBank with new capabilities ‘to enable the development of new 5G use cases for mobile broadband users, as well as for enterprises and industry partners’.

The latest development builds on a long 5G collaboration between the two companies, including 5G RAN and 5G EPC, which saw Ericsson selected as SoftBank’s primary 5G RAN vendor in May 2019.
