T-Mobile US has confirmed that it plans to phase out the recently acquired Sprint brand from 2 August this year, as the company ‘combines brand operations’ with the smaller operator, unifying under the T-Mobile name on a nationwide basis for the first time. CEO Mike Sievert commented: ‘On that day, T-Mobile emerges as the newly combined company’s flagship brand in retail, with most legacy Sprint stores rebranding with a fresh coat of magenta paint and fresh deals on the way.’ Interestingly, T-Mobile appears to be downplaying the development; the announcement was hidden in an unrelated press release regarding the introduction of the cellco’s new ‘Scam Shield’.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the long-running merger between the two companies finally closed on 1 April this year, and T-Mobile has wasted little time in utilising Sprint’s impressive spectrum portfolio to boost its 5G rollouts.
