Vivo to launch 5G in eight state capitals this month

16 Jul 2020

Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) has become the latest Brazilian cellco to confirm its 5G launch plans, with its network set to go live before the end of this month. TeleTime quotes CEO Christian Gebara as saying that 5G will be available in selected parts of eight state capitals, namely: Sao Paulo, Salvador, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Goiania, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte.

Like its rivals Claro Brasil and TIM Brasil, Vivo will use dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology, which enables the parallel operation of 4G and 5G via one frequency band. Claro’s new network will serve parts of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from this month, while TIM Brasil will switch on 5G in September, in Bento Goncalves, Itajuba and Tres Lagoas.
