Claro Colombia has announced that the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications (Ministerio de Tecnologias de la Informacion y las Comunicaciones, MinTIC) has issued it with a block of 3.5GHz spectrum for 5G testing purposes. The spectrum has initially been made available for a six-month period, which is extendable for the same duration. The non-commercial pilot project will see the spectrum used via base stations situated in Bogota, Medellin, Cali and Barrancabermeja to trial mobile and fixed-wireless solutions. In addition, Claro will team up with various public and private institutions to explore areas such as e-health, virtual reality, assisted vehicles and smart cities.
