The Philippines’ new third telco DITO Telecommunity Corp is reportedly still in the tower acquisition phase of its rollout in parts of Davao Region, despite its intention to launch commercial services there in March 2021. The SunStar newspaper cites an official from the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC)-Davao Region, Nelson Canete, as saying that DITO is currently applying for permits to build new towers in some identified areas, while in nearby Davao City, it is also in negotiations with property owners to secure clearance to set up towers there too. ‘We do not have a definite timeline of their construction, but I’m aware they are currently conducting a lot acquisition[s] in that area. I am aware of this because I was invited during a committee hearing in Nabunturan,’ the NTC official is quoted as saying. The NTC is said to be focused on the type of equipment the new operator intends to use in its network and has recommended DITO to ‘prioritise their services on areas hardly reached by existing telcos’ – which would imply de facto duopoly, PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom.
