No 5G licences until 2024, Paraguayan official confirms

Juan Carlos Duarte, the head of Paraguay’s National Telecommunications Commission (Consejo Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, Conatel), has clarified that he will not initiate a tender for 5G mobile licences until at least 2024. The official told Hoy.com.py: ‘As for 5G technology, in the short term there is no possibility that it will be tendered or awarded to any operator before 2024.’ The comments were made after residents in the town of Villarrica set fire to a cell tower with the intention of destroying it, mirroring scenes elsewhere in the world.

TeleGeography notes that baseless conspiracy theories linking 5G rollouts to COVID-19 continue to circulate on social media and have led to widespread vandalism of cell sites in Europe and beyond.
