stc to switch off 3G services in Saudi Arabia by 2022

Saudi Telecom Company (stc) has revealed that it plans to decommission its 3G network in ‘less than two years’ and direct the bulk of its investments towards the expansion of 4G and 5G technologies. The company is aiming to gradually migrate its 3G customers towards 4G/5G before 2022 and has commenced a project to switch off 3G in ‘various regions in stages’. Engineer Khaled Al-Darrab, Vice President of Infrastructure Unit at stc, said: ‘The decision to stop the 3G network will increase the focus of our investment on more advanced technologies, ensuring that stc customers enjoy the best possible experiences offered by modern networks, as part of the comprehensive digital transformation path, according to the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision Programme.’
