15 May 2020

Puerto Rico Telephone Company (PRTC, which trades as Claro PR), an incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC), has filed certification with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding the planned ‘retirement’ of its legacy copper network. As per the documentation – which has been sent to the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau (WCB) for review – ‘PRTC plans to retire copper facilities and replace them with fibre facilities to provide services over its fibre-to-the-premises network.’

The copper retirement certification namechecks major locations such as San Juan, Ponce, Arecibo, Guaynabo and Mayaguez. The process is expected to be completed on or after 31 July 2020.
