Polkomtel launches 5G

11 May 2020

Polish cellco Polkomtel, which is part of the Cyfrowy Polsat group and operates under the Plus brand, has launched the country’s first commercial 5G mobile network. A network of 100 transmitters has been put into operation in seven cities – Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin and Wroclaw – an area which is home to around 900,000 people. The second stage of its rollout will bring 5G coverage to the whole of Warsaw and surrounding towns, with over 600 additional 5G base stations due to be built, covering approximately two million people.

Plus is using the 2.6GHz band for the new network, with the Polish government having recently postponed its auction of 5G-capable frequencies in the 3.4GHz-3.8GHz range. The cellco says its 5G offer includes smartphones and routers, and its product line will be expanded further during May and June.
