DICT to trim telcos’ Wi-Fi spectrum user fees

27 Apr 2020

The Philippine Star reports that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has revealed plans to lower telecoms operators’ spectrum user fees (SUF) on their fixed Wi-Fi internet connectivity services. The proposals cover services offered to both business and residential users and are designed to encourage domestic mobile operators to improve ‘the speed, accessibility and cost of their services to Filipino homes, especially during the extended enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in most parts of the country due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic’. It is understood that DICT undersecretary for operations Eliseo Rio Jr. will issue a department order to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to implement the change.

Cutting the SUF for fixed-wireless broadband services will likely help smaller telcos in urban areas outside Metro Manila to improve their infrastructure and service offerings, especially for residential users, Rio said.
