Telekom aims to boost 5G coverage to 50% of Germans by year-end

24 Apr 2020

Telekom Deutschland (TD), the domestic fixed and mobile operator of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced plans to increase 5G coverage to more than half of the German population by the end of the year, rising to 99% of the population and 90% of the territory by 2025. The firm is currently trialling new technology that will optimally reuse existing passive antenna technology for future technologies, in parallel to active antennas. In addition, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) will also be implemented to enable the parallel operation of two mobile communications standards in one frequency band. TD will refarm 5MHz of its existing 3G 2100MHz spectrum for LTE and 5G, and by the end of the year the firm will triple the spectrum used for high speed data services.

At present, TD’s 5G network is available in eight cities, while its 4G LTE network, which supports speeds of up to 300Mbps, covers 98.1% of the population.
