Unicom and Huawei launch 5G indoor Massive MIMO solution

14 Apr 2020

Chinese full service provider China Unicom and vendor Huawei have announced the launch of a 5G indoor distributed Massive MIMO solution, which will significantly improve 5G capacity. The companies explained in a joint statement that the solution introduces Massive MIMO technology to Huawei’s LampSite Digital Indoor System (DIS), to form distributed Massive MIMO antenna arrays supporting up to 64T64R capabilities. ‘Through dynamic coordination among multiple digital indoor headends, the capacity on indoor networks becomes scalable, self-adapting to changes in data traffic,’ the statement adds, going on to note that: ‘compared with the cell splitting approach, both interference and manual commissioning costs are significantly reduced, while also effectively increasing 5G indoor spectral efficiency.’ The development is in line with new requirements from the Chinese government, issued in March this year, which instructed 5G network operators to provide wider indoor coverage, greater support for applications in vertical industries and to enable the exploration of new business models.
