China’s three mobile network operators (MNOs) have jointly published a white paper on 5G messaging services advocating the use of the GSMA’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol. The paper outlines technical specifications and envisions the establishment of an ecosystem built around MNOs, equipment vendors, platform providers, AI developers and mobile device manufacturers. China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telcom have each confirmed plans to cooperate with other parties within the industry chain to support the development of the RCS ecosystem and, in turn, promote 5G development and adoption.
The white paper was also supported by a group of eleven equipment vendors including Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi and Samsung. The Global Times writes that Huawei plans to commercialise the 5G messaging service in June this year, whilst ZTE is set to follow later that month. Xiaomi, meanwhile, will support 5G RCS on all of its future 5G handsets.
