Telecom Malagasy (Telma) has completed a programme initiated in October 2019 to upgrade its LTE network to LTE-A (‘4G+’) across the island, according to a press release on its website. Telma, Madagascar’s largest mobile network operator (MNO), claims data transmission rates over the upgraded network are twice as fast as 4G. Telma CEO Patrick Pisal-Hamida stated: ‘We are continuing to invest to offer our customers the best internet in Africa (and among the best in the world), thus helping to reduce the digital divide for all Madagascans and in line with objective No. 22 of the ‘Initiative for the Emergence of Madagascar’ aimed at modernising Madagascar’s telecoms infrastructure.’
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in July 2019 Telma awarded Ericsson a four-year network upgrade contact worth almost USD100 million to extend and optimise its core network and RAN.
