Industry group the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has requested that additional spectrum be allocated to the nation’s mobile providers to cope with the surge in data usage resulting from the coronavirus outbreak as greater numbers of people work from home and self-quarantine, the Business Standard reports. In a letter to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the COAI requested additional frequencies for both access and backhaul on a short term, temporary basis. The group also requested that permissions relating to telecom towers be expedited to improve capacity, and that customer verification rules be relaxed to reduce the time to on-board new users.
