Spanish govt suspends portability during pandemic; 9.5m numbers ported in 2019

19 Mar 2020

The Spanish government has suspended number portability (NP) for fixed and mobile operators for the duration of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. The decision was included in Royal Decree-Law 8/2020, dated 17 March, with a view to eliminating unnecessary procedures.

According to the National Commission for Markets and Competition (Comision Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia, CNMC), more than 9.5 million customers ported their numbers in 2019 alone – broken down as 7.3 million mobile number portability (MNP) requests and 2.2 million fixed number portability (FNP) requests. Alternative operator Grupo MASMOVIL has consistently benefited from portability gains in recent years, at the expense of its more established rivals.
