SmarTone picks Ericsson for 5G

19 Mar 2020

Hong Kong cellco SmarTone has awarded Ericsson a five-year contract to deploy its RAN and core 5G networks. SmarTone will use Ericsson Spectrum Sharing to enable it to launch 5G services using its existing bands. Magnus Ewerbring, Chief Technology Officer for Asia Pacific at Ericsson, said: ‘With Ericsson Spectrum Sharing, SmarTone will be able to more efficiently allocate its spectrum assets according to traffic demands, using its existing infrastructure. This ensures, not only a smoother transition to 5G but also a faster one.’ Ericsson is the sole supplier of SmarTone’s 4G network and will continue as its sole 5G vendor, continuing a 28-year partnership.
