Nokia wins optical transport mobile backhaul deal with Rakuten

10 Mar 2020

Equipment vendor Nokia has announced that Rakuten Mobile will deploy the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch to power its reconfigurable photonic mesh mobile backhaul network. Japan’s new fourth mobile carrier is gearing up to launch what it claims is the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualised cloud-native 5G mobile network, and the deployment of Nokia’s optical component technologies will allow it to grow its network bandwidth for the rapid rollout of 4G and 5G services, Nokia said. Rakuten Mobile’s new mobile network is being underpinned by a nationwide optical infrastructure covering all 47 prefectures throughout Japan and supporting backhaul and data centre interconnect (DCI) applications. The Finnish firm said that its wavelength routing technology will be used in both the long-haul and metro optical networks, creating a photonic mesh – the first of its kind for a mobile backhaul network.
