Polkomtel claims over 70 5G-ready base stations

5 Mar 2020

Polish cellco Polkomtel, which operates under the Plus brand, says it has now installed over 70 base stations on its pre-commercial 5G network. The firm is deploying networks utilising 50MHz of 2600MHz TDD spectrum, saying that this will provide improved performance compared to the 2100MHz band, which must be shared between 3G and 5G – a reference to rival operator P4/Play which is using the 2100MHz range for its own 5G rollout.

Play revealed recently that over half of Poland’s population is now covered by its 5G-ready network, with rollouts progressing in the Tri-City area (Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot) plus 16 additional markets. The Polish government is due to auction C-band 3.4GHz-3.8GHz licences this year which will provide additional frequencies to support 5G networks.
