Megacable plots USD400m GPON deployment

3 Mar 2020

Megacable, Mexico’s largest cable operator by subscribers, has disclosed plans to invest USD400 million in the deployment of fibre GPON infrastructure in its existing markets. El Universal quotes CEO Enrique Yamuni Robles as saying that the fibre overlay will be completed within two years. The admission represents a notable strategic shift for the cableco; as recently as January this year Megacable revealed plans to upgrade its cable networks to the DOCSIS 3.1 platform in order to deliver gigabit download speeds to end users.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Megacable is the country’s second largest ISP by subscribers, behind Telmex. As of 31 December 2019 its cable networks passed more than 8.8 million homes and supported 3.098 million broadband subscribers.
