China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has published subscriber figures for January 2020, including 5G subscriptions for the first time. The company confirmed that it had signed up 6.736 million ‘5G Package Customers’ by the end of January, noting that its definition excludes IoT subscribers. China Mobile reported a slight dip in its total and 4G subscriber bases during the month – recording 862,000 total net disconnections, of which 170,000 were 4G subscriptions – counting a total of 949.415 million mobile customers, including 757.844 million 4G users. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Mobile commercially launched 5G services in October last year alongside its two rival mobile network operators (MNOs) China Telecom and China Unicom. Neither of its competitors have disclosed 5G subscriber numbers to date, although the duo have not yet released subscriber data for January 2020.
