13 Feb 2020

Millicom International Cellular (MIC) has selected US-based Affirmed Networks to deploy its cloud-based, 5G-ready core network solution across Latin America, where it offers mobile and cable services under the Tigo brand name. The two companies expect the upgrade to improve service agility and reduce operational costs across geographically distributed networks.

The vendor notes that it will deploy its virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) solution on VMware’s vCloud NFV platform. The virtualised Wi-Fi gateway to provide seamless handoffs between its macrocellular networks and Wi-Fi environments. The agreement will also allow the future introduction of 5G services to the region, paving the way for high-bandwidth, low-latency services such as augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR), real-time video streaming and IoT applications.
