Zamtel launches new subscriber identification drive

7 Feb 2020

Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel) is reportedly asking all of its mobile subscribers to once again register their personal information, though this time the telco is integrating biometric data into the process. According to Agence Ecofin, with a view to combating telecoms fraud and cybercrime, the state-owned operator has directed subscribers to provide it with not only the identity information provided in previous SIM registration programmes, but also with facial biometric data. It is understood that Zamtel has set a deadline of 31 March 2020 for customers to register their information, and those that fail to do so will have their SIM cards blocked. As an incentive to customers to provide the required information, the operator is said to be offering 1GB of data and 50 call minutes to those that do.
