Play opens 5G pilot in Sokolow Podlaski with Ericsson

3 Feb 2020

Polish operator P4 (Play) has partnered Ericsson to deploy a pilot 5G network in Sokolow Podlaski, using Massive MIMO technology. While declaring the network section as ‘ready for commercial launch’, Play board member Michal Ziolkowski added: ‘Of course, the necessary conditions [for launch] are the availability of end [user] devices and additional frequencies … Our customers will soon be able to enjoy the full potential of 5G technology.’ The pilot 5G infrastructure covers the central part of Sokolow Podlaski, which is the capital town of Sokolow County, located around 80 kilometres east of Warsaw.

As TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported last month, Play has already deployed 5G equipment covering the entire northern city of Gdynia and is awaiting regulatory clearance for commercial launch there, having been permitted to begin 2100MHz 5G trials in the tri-city area of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot in December 2019.

Rival cellco Polkomtel (Plus) is working with Ericsson on 5G network rollouts in five cities – Gdansk, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin and Wroclaw.
