Bouygues embarks on live 5G tests in Lyon

28 Jan 2020

French telecoms operator Bouygues Telecom has commenced live 5G tests with commercially available devices in the Lyon metropolitan area. The company said that the trial phase will run for ‘several months’; around 50 users will participate in the tests, using 5G-enabled flagship handsets, including the Xiaomi Mix 3, Oppo Reno and Huawei Mate 20×.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in January 2019 Bouygues Telecom, in partnership with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technology, conducted a 5G call in real conditions on the streets of Lyon. The setup used a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem, which was connected to Bouygues Telecom’s 5G site in Lyon, composed of 5G Ericsson 6488 active radio antennas linked to the fibre-optic network core. Lyon was the second city in which Bouygues Telecom deployed 5G in France, following the launch of a 5G pilot in Bordeaux in July 2018.
