Hong Kong cellco SmarTone says the territory is ready to adopt 5G technology and that it expects 80% of the population to be covered by 5G networks within a year of its launch. Chief Technology Officer Stephen Chau is quoted by The Standard as saying that there are sufficient existing 3G and 4G base stations to meet the needs of 5G. He added that he expects greater data usage and lower fees per GB with 5G. All four of Hong Kong’s mobile operators are expected to launch 5G services this year.
