22 Jan 2020

Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has installed a GSM mobile network in Antarctica, at the Russian expedition station Progress, PRIME news agency reported. The cellco stated: ‘MTS opened the base station in the framework of a joint project with the Russian Antarctic Expedition. A stable signal covers residential and work modules of station Progress, the aerodrome’s area and the bay where ships berth.’ Previously, telephone connectivity was provided only via an IP phone at the station, and researchers used walkie-talkies for local communication. In addition to MTS clients, the new network can be used by subscribers of international operators with whom the operator has roaming agreements.
