Ethio Telecom has revealed that it generated a total turnover of ETB22.04 billion (USD692.9 million) in the six months to 31 December 2019, a figure it said represented a year-on-year increase of 32% and was just ahead of target. In a press release detailing its performance in the first half of its current fiscal year ending 30 June 2020, the telco said that mobile voice services accounted for 50.4% of its overall revenues in the period under review, while ‘data and internet’ contributed a further 27.3%, revenue from international business and VAS accounted for 9.8% and 8.5%, respectively, and ‘other’ the remainder.
In operational terms, Ethio Telecom said that the number of mobile voice subscribers on its books stood at 44.03 million as at end-December 2019, while it noted specifically that between June-December 2019 it had added 759,741 3G customers and 170,737 2G customers. With regards to its infrastructure, the operator noted that preparation for its 4G network expansion to additional areas of the capital Addis Ababa, as well as regional capital and ‘other major cities’ was now underway. Meanwhile, ‘data and internet users’ were reported as totalling 22.74 million at end-2019, with the figure for ‘fixed services’ users numbering 1.01 million at that date.
