Ukrtelecom stopping payphone services in February

6 Jan 2020

Ukrainian national fixed line operator Ukrtelecom has announced that it will cease operating public payphone services on 1 February 2020. Ukrtelecom, which owns around 4,800 payphones mainly in urban locations, says that the service has been unprofitable for many years due to decreasing demand explained by the popularity of other communication channels. A payphone now averages only around 2.5 minutes daily call time, with Ukrtelecom reporting less than 380,000 total payphone voice minutes in 2019 compare to around 900,000 minutes in 2017. The figure continued shrinking despite the telco providing free fixed-to-fixed network calls from its phone booths.
