Dos Santos to fight asset seizure order

Billionaire Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos has denounced as ‘politically motivated’ a court order to seize an estimated USD1 billion worth of her assets including a 25% indirect stake in the country’s leading mobile operator Unitel, The Associated Press reported. An Angolan court on 23 December 2019 ordered her bank accounts frozen and her shares in local companies seized, including Unitel, Zap Media (including broadband operator Zap Fibra), BFA bank and cement company Cimangola, amongst others, in a move which is seen as part of President Joao Lourenco’s anti-corruption drive. Dos Santos, with a fortune estimated by Forbes at USD2.2 billion, is the daughter of former Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
