Germany’s Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) has approved the plans of Telekom Deutschland and EWE to jointly expand fibre-optic networks to customers in northwest Germany, including parts of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bremen. ‘The parties involved have committed themselves to substantial investments in the rapid expansion of gigabit-capable networks. In addition, they have agreed to observe certain competitive guidelines. As we see it, the cooperation will lead to significant improvements in the telecommunications markets in the region concerned and also in rural areas,’ commented the competition authority’s president, Andreas Mundt.

Last month Telekom Deutschland and EWE submitted a list of proposed commitments and concessions to the Federal Cartel Office to gain approval for the fibre-optic network development joint venture, which was first announced in December 2017.
