Vodafone Greece has opened a trial 5G mobile network in the city of Trikala in the centre of the country. Equipment for the pilot network was supplied by Huawei. According to a report from Kathimerini, Vodafone plans to launch commercial 5G services in 2021, with its 3G networks to be switched off the following year, enabling it to concentrate mainly on 4G and 5G services, with 2G retained for IoT services.
A 5G pilot network operated by Vodafone’s rival Wind in the city of Kalamata was recently forced to close due to fears from local authorities over the radiation levels and potential negative health effects. Trikala Mayor Giorgos Papastergios criticised what he termed ‘technophobes’, adding that his city is looking to become ‘the capital of giga’.
