Portsmouth-based ISP toob has announced that it has connected the first customers to its gigabit-capable fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network in Southampton, United Kingdom. According to ISPreview, initially the operator’s infrastructure is only available in a few apartment blocks to the south of the city centre, although it expects to extend coverage to additional buildings within the ‘next few weeks’, while network construction is also reported to have begun in the Bevois area. toob’s rollout in Southampton, which is using full fibre equipment from ADTRAN, is expected to cost GBP50 million (USD65 million) to complete and it is aiming for its network to pass 100,000 premises by the end of 2021. Looking further ahead, the operator is said to have plans to expand beyond Southampton, with a longer-term goal of covering more than one million premises across the southern part of England.
