KDDI teams with Facebook to codevelop 5G in Japan

26 Nov 2019

Japan’s KDDI Corp (branded au) is partnering Facebook Inc. to jointly develop a range of new services provided over next generation 5G networks in the country, The Japan Times reports. Under the tie-up, the two companies will look to codevelop content that will enable smartphone users to take advantage of a ‘goods sales system utilising augmented reality by taking advantage of the massive data transmission capabilities of 5G,’ people familiar with the matter are cited as saying.

With 5G networks scheduled for launch from March 2020, KDDI hopes to tap into the social media firm’s augmented and virtual reality (VR) technologies to develop content that, for example, could allow users to take photos of items to be sold by retailers and other shops, and let them know how they would look if worn, by using photograph-sharing apps such as Instagram. Going forward, the pair plan to open a test store as early as January 2020 to allow visitors to experience how the new system might work.
